What to do in Canggu

Slightly north of Seminyak sits the laid back destination of Canggu. Known for beaches like Canggu and Echo both boasting a strong surf, this small resort village attracts surfers from all around the world…but mostly Australia!

Canggu has a great vibe. Very chilled, with a lovely strip of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants to suit any holiday maker. This small, less touristy destination was one of our favourites during our trip around Bali – it has a lot to offer in a more carefree, nonchalant atmosphere.

Enjoy the hippy, quirky spot of Bali and make sure you add these spots to your to do list:

Base yourself in a homestay

Being a slightly less touristy destination, homestays are more prevalent in Canggu compared to other destinations in Bali. With less hotels around (although, the intercontinental is currently building a mega complex by the beach), homestays are a great alternative.

We stayed at an amazing little homestay just a short 10 minute walk from the beach. Temuku Guest House booked through booking.com offered us a generous sized double room with a large double bed and beautiful furniture. Our private bathroom was extremely clean, and we could practically step outside our front door and jump straight into the pool – perfection!

The best part was the honesty jar! The fridge by the pool was full of beers and soft drinks which we could help ourselves to and pay for by popping the money in the jar. With a large beer for less than £1, it was pretty much paradise!

For 3 nights, the room only set us back £55 which included breakfast and free Wi-Fi. Everyone was very social and we had some brilliant days sat around the pool chatting with other guests.

Get healthy at Crate

You can’t visit Canggu without delving into a delicious smoothie bowl at Crate. Expect to find this café completely full, and you may have to share your table with other holiday makers but the delicious breakfast options served up make it totally worth it.

Don’t miss the house-blended coffee, the acai bowls and the multiple egg dishes. The smoothies are pretty amazing too! Perfect, tasty treat to cleanse the body after a heavy one.

Party the night away at Old Mans

The lively beachfront spot where the whole town comes to party the night away. Get your photo in front of the iconic Old Man’s mural then grab a drink, and settle yourself for a night of laid back tunes and hippy vibes.

Find your zen at The Practice

Yoga is an institution in Bali. All locations offer great classes and a place to escape but when in Canggu the place to find your Zen is at The Practice.

Bargain hunt at Love Anchor

The perfect little set up for a midday shop. On the walk down to the beach, stop off at Love Anchor for a browse – with a combination of Balinese goods and up market Aussie brands like Rip Curl, there’s something for everyone. If you’re in Canggu on a Sunday prepare yourself for a barter as the market comes to town with a selection of beautiful jewellery, bags and clothes.

Catch the sunset at The Lawn

The perfect beachfront spot to catch the epic Balinese sunset whilst sipping on a coconut mojito. The lawn encapsulates the boho vibe with crochet accents, floor seating, fairy lights and succulents creating the idyllic atmosphere for evening drinks with friends. Made even better by the infinity pool to float around in.

Discover the murals

One thing we both noticed and loved about Canggu was the street art and murals we stumbled across, bringing the area beautifully to life. When exploring, we discovered a new piece of art at almost every turn – each tastefully done and suiting the quirky vibe of Canggu down to a t.
